Hyssop essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the leaves and flowers of the hyssop shrub. The health benefits of this essential oil can be attributed to its properties as an astringent, stimulant, antispasmodic, antirheumatic, antiseptic, carminative, healing, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, hypertensive, nervous system, sudorific, tonic, febrifuge, vermifuge, and vulnerary substance.

As an antispasmodic, hyssop essential oil relieves spasms of the respiratory system, thus curing spasmodic coughs. It also relieves spasms of the nervous system, helping to alleviate convulsions and related problems, as well as reducing muscle spasms, which can cure cramps and intestinal spasms, relieving acute abdominal pain.

Since hyssop oil improves and promotes circulation, it helps cure diseases associated with poor circulation, such as rheumatism, arthritis, gout, and swelling.
