Cloves were popularly used in ancient India and China. Ancient Chinese medicine is believed to have used cloves to treat indigestion, diarrhea, hernias, athlete's foot, and fungal infections. They have been used to treat mouth ulcers, toothaches, and as a breath freshener since ancient times in these countries. They were one of the first spices to be traded. Arab traders are said to have introduced cloves to Europe during the days of the Roman Empire.
