The health benefits of sage essential oil can be attributed to its properties as an antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antibacterial, collagenous and choleretic, wound healing, purifying, digestive, disinfectant, emmenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, laxative, and stimulant.
The presence of camphor and camphene in this essential oil gives it antifungal properties. This oil is capable of inhibiting fungal infections, both internally and externally, and relieves fungal infections such as dysentery, skin diseases, athlete's foot, and dermatitis. This property is one of the reasons behind its use in skin care products.
Sage essential oil aids digestion, soothes the stomach, and improves the functioning of the entire digestive system against inflammation caused by excess acid. It also neutralizes acids in the stomach and bloodstream, providing relief from heartburn and acidosis, which in turn protects us from peptic ulcers due to acidity, as well as boils, rashes, and skin diseases that occur when acid levels increase in the blood.
