Brigid's Cross
Brigid's Cross
Brigid's Cross is a Celtic symbol of protection
The cross represents the -Wheel of Life- due to its 4 ends, marking the cycles of nature from birth in spring, to death in winter.
Tradition dictates that on the night of Imbolc (one of the four most important festivals for the Celts, marking the beginning of spring or the bringing of light and fertility to the land), the cross should be left on the altar for the Goddess Brigit to bless it. The following day, the cross should be placed on the wall, above the front door, above the fireplace, or in the kitchen (where Brigit's fire is present), to bring blessing, prosperity, and protection to the home and its inhabitants.
The cross is made and renewed each year; the one placed the previous year is burned to keep the hearth burning.
Brigit is celebrated on February 1st during Imbolc and on the 2nd, Candlemas.
